GBBL Summer League Format and Rules

1 - Overview:

All rules will follow the Official FIBA Basketball Rulebook unless otherwise stated below or in the rules section

*Access to the rulebook can be found attached at the bottom of this page*

2 - GBBSL Format & Rules:

  • Each team will play three games of two 7min halves with a 1min halftime.
  • 5 on 5 with 1 sub for each team
  • If a team only has 5, the games will be on 4 on 4, unless both GM's agree to playing 5's
  • Subs can be requested if teams are short 1-2 players. But no guarantee. Subs will be of equal or lesser value.

a) Game Time Format: Runtime will be used for the entire game, except during the last 3mins of a close game (6pts or less). A 30sec shot clock will be introduced in the last 3mins of a close game, as long as it continues to be 6pts or less. This includes offensive rebounds, the clock will reset to 30secs.

b) Overtime Periods: No overtime. If the score is tied after the game, it will remain a tie and both teams will be awarded with 1pt

c) Mercy Rule: If a team is winning by 15+ points at any point with under 3mins to go, the game will end.

d) Close Game: Close game is defined as '6pts or less'. Take fouls are in play in the last 30sec of a close game. Player must grab opponent with the ball and shout FOUL. This will result in 2FT for the offensive team. Clock will be stopped during FT. 2 take fouls max per game.

d) Foul at buzzer: If losing team is fouled with time expiring (5secs or less) and has an opportunity to win or tie the game, this will result in a new 10sec possession. If a foul occurs again with time expring, it will result in 1 technical free throw and the ball. Line judges discretion.

e) Intentional Foul: Not allowed. If a team intentionally fouls to avoid an easy bucket or breakaway, this will result in 2 technical FT's and the ball for the offensive team. Futher penalties may apply. Line judges discretion.

f) Line Judges: 2 lines judges will be appointed per game to make the call on any possession arguments, cherry picking, last second fouls.

g) Cherry Picking: Not allowed. If any player is deemed to 'cherry pick' (stay near the basket or around half-court, waiting for a rebound or turnover to score an easy basket) the basket will not count and will result in a turnover. Line judges discretion

h) Late Start Penalty: A technical free throw will be awarded to the opposing team for each minute the late team arrives after the scheduled game start time, beginning 2 minutes past the designated start time. If a team has not arrived by halftime, the team arriving late will concede a forfeit and lose the game 15-0. If a team is scheduled to have 6 players, you need 5 to start the game. If a team is only to have 5 players, then 4 players needed to start the game. This is determined before 9pm.

i) Playoffs: Scheduled for June 17th. Only registered players are eligible for playoffs and the bracket will follow NBA 'play-in' type of format. This is to give an advantage to top 2 seeds.

(Double knockout for seeds 1 & 2. Single knockout for seeds 3 & 4)

  1. Game A: 1 vs 2 - Winner goes to Finals. Loser goes into knockout bracket
  2. Game B: 3 vs 4 - Winner goes to knockout bracket. Loser is eliminated.
  3. Game C: Loser of A vs Winner of B. Loser is eliminated.
  4. Game D: Winner of A vs Winner of C. If 1st loss for seed 1/2, play game E, otherwise winner crowned champion
  5. Game E: Winner crowned champion
